L.C. Anderson High School was Austin's only public African American high school. Austin Public Schools opened a new campus and building for Anderson High School in 1953. Constructed in response to a growing African American population and a national and local "threat" to segregated schools, Anderson High School is an example of an equalization school in Austin, Texas. L.C. Anderson High School closed in 1971 as part of the Austin Independent School District's desegregation plan. The 1953 school is the only remaining historic building associated with the city's only black high school.
