A note on the naming of schools: School names reflected the whites in power at the time the schools were constructed. School boards named schools in African
American neighborhoods after school board members, prominent local whites, or white presidents. However, many schools in black neighborhoods have undergone name changes to honor African American leaders. For example, Gresham Meggett Elementary and High School on James Island, initially named after a white school board member, is now the Septima Clark Leadership Academy, named after a prominent teacher who was fired because of her membership in the NAACP.
